Resources to change your life
There’s an overwhelming amount of resources on the internet to help you to learn and grow, some free, others at a cost. On this page I have come up with some of the resources that every professional nurse and caregiver really should browse through to improve confidence and competence in the workplace. At the end of every learning activity you should have learned something or some perspective that you did not know, you should be reinforcing knowledge that you have previously learned, but was lost somewhere in your memories, and you should have developed skills to make you more effective in your work.
Most of the training providers listed here have at least one free on-line course that you can have a go at, so do it!
Videos to help you to learn
Armando Hasudungan has made an extensive array of excellent graphic explanations of many biology and medicine concepts, suitable for all stages of learning. They cover a wide range of physiological processes and are short enough to quickly get you up to speed.

Free Online training resources
There are heaps of online training programs that you can do to improve your knowledge and skills, enabling your confidence to educate others, discuss patient medical issues, and work more effectively as a part of a team. I have not yet listed the many excellent CPD providers that charge for education, but have listed a few free learning resources that can be used as CPD, understand complex conditions, and demonstrate a commitment to learning. Keep checking back to see what I come up with in the future.

Training providers for remote nursing skills
I have included here remote nurse training because the skills developed enable and empower nurses to work more confidently and more effectively in any health care situation. Do you find yourself constantly consulting other professionals with simplistic questions or inappropriate requests that you later regret? Do you find that medical practitioners become less responsive to your requests or criticise you for calling them unnecessarily? Do you perform poorly in a medical emergency? Developing skills in remote practice can help you to become more structured and effective in clinical assessment, clinical documentation, and clinical communication.
CRANAplus are one of Australia’s leading providers of training for care professionals working in rural and remote Australia. They provide training for nurses who are work in remote practice, but the skills and knowledge these courses provide are valuable for anyone developing clinical leadership skills in any health care setting. Some starting points are:
Remote Emergency Care course is essential for any nurse working remotely and is of high value for any nurse working in the rural health care setting. This includes basic life support (BLS) certificate, and skills stations in intermediate life support, airway management, chest decompression, intravenous/intraosseous cannulation, spinal immobilisation, patient assessment, as well as essential training in structured assessment and clinical decision making pathways, clinical communication, and clinical documentation. This course is suitable for Enrolled Nurses and Registered Nurses.
Online learning packages are designed to meet the needs of nurses working in remote settings. They provide mandatory competencies, Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS), basic counselling skills, clinical upskilling, physical assessment, and free learning modules to help professionals maintain safety.
Centre for Remote Health provides valuable training for rural and remote health practitioners, with everything from free online learning modules, short courses, training workshops, student placements and post-graduate education. They also provide free access to the Remote Primary Health Care Manuals which are the definitive clinical practice manuals for remote health care and make for some interesting reading.
Conducting Medical Telephone Consultations is a free on-line course to help nurses develop the skills to effectively consult medical practitioners and emergency transport services over the telephone by reinforcing structured processes and communication practices.
Pharmacotherapeutics for Remote Area Nurses is an online or face-to-face course that trains nurses to understand medication use, interactions, and risks in a remote care setting.
Transition to Remote Area Nursing is a two week workshop to provide Registered Nurses with foundational skills for working in remote health settings, and is considered to be invaluable for nurses wishing to transition to remote practice.
PodCast
Australian Health and Medical
There are many medical podcasts available, and some are excellent for staying up to date with the latest research. Listening to good podcasts allow you to learn the latest in health and medical research while getting accustomed to listening and understanding professional language. You do not have to understand everything that is discussed, just casually listening will help to pick up new knowledge and understanding. All of these programs are in a language that Registered and Enrolled Nurses should be familiar with.
ABC RN Health Report - Dr Norman Swan does the hard work of filtering through much of the contemporary medical research to present interviews with a focus on keeping health consumers and health professionals informed of changes in best practice.
Medical Journal of Australia - Interviews with the researchers who are publishing their reports in the Medical Journal of Australia. This is a great way of discovering new findings in medical research. Have a look at February 18, 2018 for the two part episode on medicinal cannabis, a topic that I have been frequently asked about.
Australian Prescriber - The podcast accompanying the peer-reviewed journal published by NPS Medicinewise covering a variety of medical and non-pharmaceutical therapies. Check out the episode from 15 May 2018 on Prescribing wellness for chronic pain.
Aged Care Podcasts
Yes, there are podcasts specifically for aged care professionals!
Aged Care Executive - despite the name, this is not intended for executives but for ALL providers of aged care in the home, the community, and residential. All aged care workers should add this to their list in order to drive change from the bottom up.
Aged Care Insite - The podcast for the journal. The website does not make it easy to find the podcast, but the articles with audio interviews have the little microphone in the bottom right corner of the photo.
Nursing Podcasts
There are heaps of nursing podcasts around the world. It’s a bit of a task to find one that suits your personality and work role. Some of the ones that I listen to are:
The Handover - Another podcast coming out of Ausmed.
Nursing Review - A bit of a crossover with Aged Care Insite, as it comes from the same publishers, but some great interviews on contemporary Australian nursing.
For those interested in delivering education
Actually, we should all be interested in educating others, whether they be clients, their families, students, new staff, and our peers.
Care to Learn - Ausmed interviewing clinical educators from around Australia on various clinical education issues.
Other Health Topics
The thing about cancer - fom the Australian Cancer Council, exploring consumer issues surrounding diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
All in the Mind - ABC RN exploration of all things mental, from mental illness, cognition, dementia, and neuroscience.
Basic Science Learning
For those of you who just want to learn a bit with plain English language...
Dr Karl does some great basic knowledge translation with: Great Moments in Science, Shirtloads of science (my son and I both learn with this one!) and Dr Karl on JJJ. Countless people around the world are learning with one of the great science communicators of out time.
The Naked Scientists - out of Cambridge comes a diverse team of science communicators explaining scientific concepts in plain language. Check out the in short podcasts.
Podcasts to Motivate and Inspire
Podcasts are also helpful to overcome psychological trauma and mental barriers. There are literally thousands of podcasts in this space, but here are a few that are worth listening to.
Tony Robbins is one of my favorites, and my all-time favorite episode is the interview with Siri Lindley, two times world champion triathlete. This is a remarkable story of success from humiliating failures. How to ignore the criticism of others while harnessing your hunger to drive yourself to success. Listen to this when you are out on a two hour bushwalk!
Good Life Project - when you just want to feel good about being a compassionate person, it’s nice to listen to interviews with people who have combined compassion with success.
TED Radio Hour - one hour programs exploring specific topics interviewing past TED presenters for deeper insights. Check out the episode from 18 May 2018, Inspire to Action.
There are many elearning options available for nurses and health professionals.
